Todd Barber - Leather Boxes

“Boxes and vessels have been made in virtually every culture utilizing every medium. From their primal uses to the exotic and ornamental, they have captured my curiosity for years. In the creation of my boxes and vessels, the intent is to create a tactile sculptural form. Yet, there is a basic utilitarian factor to boxes: to hold something precious. Though I have worked primarily in leather for over thirty years, my pieces have evolved to incorporate museum-grade rare stones, cultural artifacts and fossils. Their colors and shapes have been the focal point to which the sculptural form has emerged. Through the execution of various primitive and contemporary techniques, these combined ancient mediums have yielded an ornamental object pleasing to the eye, waiting to be touched by the hand.
